Basic info and plot
So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) is an American dance competition television show that airs on the Fox channel. SYTYCD was created by American Idol producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe. Since season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance premiered in the US on July 20, 2005 it has grown into a huge franchise with international versions airing in several dozen countries around the world.
SYTYCD premiered with over ten million viewers and ended its first season as the top-rated show on television. So You Think You Can Dance is now in its 12th season. Starting with season 2 the show has been hosted by former British children's television personality Cat Deeley. The judging panel of season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance, which premiered on Fox on January 24, 2015, consists of Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo. Nigel is the only judge who has been features on all 12 seasons.
SYTYCD features a tiered format of the competition: first dancers enter open auditions held in major U.S. cities, then (if chosen to move on) they additional rounds of auditions at the end of which a small number of dancers are chosen as finalists. This is when the competition's main phase begins. During the main phase the contestants have to perform solo, duet, and group dance numbers in a range of styles: classical, contemporary, ballroom, hip-hop, street, club and jazz. Every episode the dancers compete for the votes of the broadcast audience which, combined with the input of judges, determines who moves on to the next stage. The champion wins a cash prize ($250,000) and the coveted title of "America's Favorite Dancer".
UPDATED February 1, 2016: A twelfth cycle of the Emmy Award-winning and highly-rated dancing competition series SYTYCD concluded on the FOX channel back in September of 2015. The network has just delighted the fans with the official renewal of the hit show for another cycle, and has even revealed the premiere date of the new episodes – Monday, May 30, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT. The new cycle will be subtitled The Next Generation and will have a major twist: it will feature much younger dancers (ages 8 to 13) who will be paired with the fan favorites from the previous seasons of the show.
