Memoirs of Jennifer Worth, which inspired the series, have been carefully elaborated with the original material from the screenwriter Heidi Thomas, based on a new historical research and stories of other midwives and nurses who used to work during that period.

Season 5 of Call the Midwife will also contain a special Christmas episode and will be released in December of 2015, and then eight more episodes of the show will be released in 2016.

UPDATED October 20, 2015: The PBS channel has just officially revealed its 2016 winter/spring schedule. A highly anticipated season 5 of the British drama series Call the Midwife is scheduled to premiere on PBS in the United States on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT. In the upcoming season, according the press release, the nuns and midwifes working in Nonnatus House will have to deal with even more difficult cases, which will include a typhoid outbreak, a spike in lung cancer and a pregnant teenage girl. The season 5 finale is scheduled to air on May 22, 2016.
