About the series
The WGN America channel has made a decision in 2015 to expand its slate of original scripted shows. Thus, in the upcoming months, two new series will be presented to the audience – Titans and Underground. Both new shows have very impressive casts. Season 1 of Underground is expected to premiere in the United States on March 9, 2016.
The new historical drama series was penned by Misha Green and Joe Pokaski, who have previously worked on such successful television projects as Helix, Sons of Anarchy, Spartacus: War of the Damned and Heroes. It will be directed by Anthony Hemingway, whose resume includes Shameless, Major Crimes and American Horror Story. The new gripping historical drama is a collaborative effort between Get Lifted Film Company, Safehouse Pictures and Sony Pictures Television and it is executive produced by no other than Oscar winning producer Akiva Goldsman, mostly known for A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code.
The plot of the new historical thriller centers on a group of slaves who have made a very brave and extremely risky decision to escape from a plantation where they work to become free. The story is set in pre-Civil war years in the South. Their only chance at freedom is the assistance of the secret organization called Underground Railroad that was created by passionate and liberal men and women to help slaves run away. The new drama stars Aldis Hodge, Jessica de Gouw and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, among others. Season 1 of Underground is set to be released on WGN America on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, but the total episode count has not been revealed yet.
