Storyline and cast
Transparent is a widely critically acclaimed, Golden Globe winning American dramedy television series that is available exclusively on Amazon Video. Created by Jill Soloway who had previously worked on United States of Tara, Six Feet Under and Grey's Anatomy, the award-winning series is a co-production between Picrow and Amazon Studios. The pilot episode was released on February 6, 2014 and the 10-episode debut season came out on Amazon on September 26, 2014.
The media and cultural discussion about transgender people has been especially loud in the past couple of years, and in that controversial conversation Transparent has been a pleasantly refreshing and funny voice. The story revolves around a college professor in his 60s who after a long marriage and having three children with his wife finally opens up to his family that he is a transgender and has always identified himself as a female.
Critical response and renewal hopes
A highly-anticipated season 2 of Transparent, consisting of 10 episodes, was released in its entirety on Amazon Video on December 11, 2015. After the show’s premiere in 2014, it has garnered a universal acclaim and the highest praise from the audience and movie critics. Some went as far as naming it the best TV show of the year. The debut chapter of the show has received 27 award nominations and collected 25 wins. Clearly, after such reception, the expectations for the second chapter were extremely high. Luckily, the creative team did not disappoint. Those who already watched new episodes are saying that a second season is even better. In other words, the best TV show has found a way to get better. The best news is that back in June, when the show was still in production, Amazon has officially ordered a third season slated to be released in 2016. UPDATED June 4, 2016: While a third installment of Transparent is currently in production to be released later this year, Amazon Studios has just announced that the mega popular dramedy series has been already officially renewed for a fourth season slated to premiere on Prime Video sometime in 2017. The early renewal decision is not at all surprising since the TV show has been showered with critical accolades in the past two years and boasts several Golden Globe and Emmy Award wins. Jill Soloway will be back as showrunner, while returning cast members include Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Gaby Hoffmann, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass.
