Basic info and storyline
Supergirl is a new American superhero action drama TV series from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television that is now airing on the CBS channel in the United States. Motivated by the success of the new shows like Arrow and Flash, comic characters continue their invasion of the small screen. This new show was inspired by the eponymous character from DC Comics. The pilot episode was released on CBS in the US on October 26, 2015.
The storyline centers on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Melissa Benoist who you probably remember as Marley from Glee. She has superpowers but has kept that fact a secret from everyone for most of her adolescence. Now, that Kara is all grown up, it is time to make use of the special powers she was born with and put them to good use by protecting people from all kinds of evil forces.
Viewer reception and chances of renewal
The debut season of Supergirl came out on the CBS channel in the US on Monday, October 26, 2015 and the premiere attracted almost 13 million viewers. This is an impressive number, but it was somewhat expected considering how much effort and money the network had spent on promoting the new show. In later episodes, the ratings have come down, but not too much and at the moment the TV series is averaging almost 9.5 million viewers. Very surprisingly, the reviews do not mirror such high ratings and are rather mixed. There is some criticism about bad characterization, forced acting and too many feminist buzzwords. In any way, we do think that the series will get greenlit for another run. UPDATED May 13, 2016: Supergirl is renewed for a second season and is slated to join The CW's superhero squad along with Flash, Arrow, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. The superhero drama is moving from CBS to its sister network following the rumors of this transition that have been floating around for a while. The reason behind the move is cited as The CW's more appropriate younger target audience. The series' ratings have declined significantly following a strong start, but a 10 million viewers season average is definitely impressive enough. Have a soft landing, Supergirl!
