Basic info and plot

The Vampire Diaries is a very popular, award-winning and long-running American horror, mystery, romance and supernatural drama television series that is currently airing on The CW channel in the United States. The hit TV series was created by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson based on the eponymous book series written by L. J. Smith. The show is co-produced for The CW by Alloy Entertainment, Outerbanks Entertainment, Warner Bros. Television and CBS Television Studios, and executive produced by Bob Levy, Leslie Morgenstein, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson. Season 1 of the supernatural drama series debuted on The CW channel on September 10, 2009.

Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW channel in the US on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT and like the previous seasons, it is set to consist of 22 one-hour episodes. The most notable change to the series is the absence of Elena Gilbert (played by Nina Dobrev). Dobrev left the series in the season six finale episode. Guest stars this season include Annie Wersching, Michael Trevino, Tim Kang, Todd Lasance and others. They join the returning cast members Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Candice King, Kat Graham, Matt Davis, Zach Roerig and Michael Malarkey.

Viewer reception and chances of renewal

Since its debut, the show has had a great response from critics, having won countless Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Saturn Awards and getting nominated for many more. The series has also been a ratings hit for The CW. In fact, for the first five seasons, it has been the most-watched show on the network before getting surpassed by Arrow. At the moment, after broadcasting five episodes, the series is averaging 1.3 million viewers, which is a 15% decline when compared to the previous season. Let’s hope that the ratings improve for the show to be greenlit for another cycle. So far, there have been no statements from The CW about the future of the series, so check back with us for the latest news, or subscribe to our notifications and get the premiere date of The Vampire Diaries season 8 automatically sent to your inbox as soon as it is announced.

Latest developments

UPDATED December 11, 2015: Having aired 9 out of its 22 episodes, The Vampire Diaries, like most winter primetime TV shows, has taken a month-long Christmas break. The CW has just revealed its 2016 winter schedule for new and returning series. Season 7B of The Vampire Diaries is scheduled to premiere on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT, followed by the new episode of The Originals at 9pm. The critically acclaimed supernatural drama series is currently averaging a little below 1.3 million viewers per episode, which is a meaningful 16% decline when compared to last year’s numbers. The question is whether the network will consider such a drop in the ratings a good enough reason to cancel she show. Stay tuned for the most up-to-date information on the show.

Updated March 13, 2016: In a decisive move The CW network announced an early renewal of all of its scripted series that have aired so far this year. Among the eleven shows is The Vampire Diaries, The CW veteran, which has been renewed for season 8. The early renewal announcement certainly brings relief to the series' creators and producers, since it wasn't an obvious decision considering the 20+% ratings decline that followed the departure of Nina Dobrev from the series. The latest episodes have averaged a mere 1.2 million viewers, but apparently the network has enough confidence in The Vampire Dairies' potential to bounce back. Stay tuned for further announcements and be sure not to miss the next season's release date.

UPDATED September 5, 2016: The CW channel’s fall programming lineup has been finalized and it features a handful of returning fan favorites as well as a few new scripted dramas and rom-coms. A new installment of the popular supernatural drama The Vampire Diaries is scheduled to debut in the US on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT and will be followed by the season premiere of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend at 9pm. This will, unfortunately, be the final chapter of the story and there are rumors that Nina Dobrev will return in a bid to bring the sliding ratings back up again. Y'all should make an episode with a kid vampire like 16 but he's like 200 years old and killed his family on accident but turned his 15 year old sister and they both survive and became rippers
