About the show
Code Black is a new American medical drama television series that is currently airing on the CBS channel in the United States. The new medical drama was created and written by Michael Seitzman who also serves as executive producer on the show alongside David Semel, Ryan McGarry, Marti Noxon and Linda Goldstein-Knowlton. Code Black is produced for CBS by Michael Seitzman's Pictures, Tiny Pyro, ABC Studios and CBS Television Studios. Season 1 of Code Black debuted on the CBS channel on September 30, 2015.
Code Black is based on the award-winning documentary by Ryan McGarry. The storyline is set in the emergency room of a Los Angeles hospital, which seems to be constantly overcrowded and understaffed. Code Black stars Marcia Gay Harden, Raza Jaffrey, Bonnie Somerville, Melanie Chandra, William Allen Young, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth and Luis Guzmán.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Season 1 of Code Black premiered on the CBS channel in the US on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 10pm ET/PT. So far, the medical drama has received mixed to positive reviews, placing it just above average. To date, after airing just 4 episodes, Code Black is averaging 7.37 million viewers per episodes, which is also just above average for a primetime CBS scripted series. It is hard to say now whether these ratings will be good enough for the series to get greenlit for another run. UPDATED December 18, 2015: CBS has just revealed its 2016 winter schedule for new and returning series. After broadcasting its mid-season finale on December 9th, the network’s freshman drama series Code Black is set to return with all new episodes on Wednesday, January 13, 2016. So far, the ratings and reviews have been rather average, and the network is yet to decide the future of the show. Stay tuned.
UPDATED May 18, 2016: The CBS network has officially renewed it freshman medical drama TV show Code Black for another round. A co-production between CBS TV Studios and ABC Studios, the new drama has delivered an average viewership of more than 7 million fans, and has also garnered amazing reviews, so the renewal was quite expected. The creative team has already started working on new material, and we have learned that in a second installment we will see a few new faces. UPDATED June 5, 2016: When CBS network’s newest medical drama television show returns for a second installment, the show will have a new structure that is designed to resemble real life. The biggest change is that starting with a second season, each new chapter of the drama series will start with a fresh crop of new residents. As such, two regular cast members – Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville – will not be returning, two recurring cast members – Boris Kodjoe and Jillian Murray – will come back as the series regulars, and a handful of new characters will be introduced. A second season of the hit show is slated to be back this fall, on Wednesdays at 10pm ET/PT. Stay tuned for the premiere date announcement.
UPDATED September 12, 2016: The medical drama Code Black had a slow start when it debuted last year on CBS, but eventually has improved greatly and ended up averaging more than 10 million viewers per episode, securing a welcome renewal. A sophomore chapter of the intense and realistic medical drama is scheduled to hit the small screen in the US on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 10/9c, following such hit shows as Survivor and Criminal Mind.
