Storyline and cast
Law & Order: SVU is a popular American police procedural and crime drama television series that is currently airing on the NBC channel in the United States. The long-running legal and crime drama series was created by Dick Wolf who also serves as executive producer for the show alongside Peter Jankowski, Ted Kotcheff, Julie Martin, Michael Smith and Jonathan Starch. The showrunners for Law & Order: SVU include Robert Palm, David J. Burke, Neal Baer and Warren Leight. Throughout its 17 seasons, the series has been produced by Wolf Films, Studios USA (1999–2002), Universal Television (2002–04, 2011–now), NBC Universal Television Studio (2004–07) and Universal Media Studios (2007–11). Season 1 of Law & Order: SVU debuted on NBC on September 20, 1999.
The story revolves around an elite team of detectives who specialize in investigating sex-related crimes in the city of New York. Law & Order: SVU currently stars Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T, Kelli Giddish, Peter Scanavino, and Raul Esparza.
Viewer reception and chances of renewal
Season 17 of Law & Order: SVU premiered on the NBC channel in the US on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at 9pm ET/PT. The police drama series has been very popular with the viewers since its debut back in 1999. It has also garnered critical acclaim and has received multiple nominations and awards, including a 2015 Golden Globe Award for Mariska Hargitay. In the previous, sixteenth season, Law & Order: SVU has averaged 7.3 million viewers per episode, which was a remarkable 9% increase when compared season-to-season. So far, in the current season, after just five episodes, the series is averaging 7.3 million viewers, which is on par with the previous season. It is more than likely that the show will get renewed for another run.

Season 17B is expected to be return to the NBC channel on Wednesday, January 6, 2016. UPDATED February 1, 2016: While the current chapter of the longest-running police procedural drama series on television is still in full swing, the NBC network has already renewed Law & Order: SVU for another round. The decision to renew was very much expected, as the award-winning crime drama continues to deliver exceptionally strong ratings for the network, currently averaging almost 8 million total viewers per episode. The renewal is the outcome of the deal extension between Dick Wolf and NBC. The romance between the two seems to be going strong, as the network has also just renewed Wolf’s newest drama series Chicago Med for a second round.
