Basic info and storyline
Gotham is an American action and crime drama television series that is currently airing on the FOX channel in the United States. The crime drama was developed by Bruno Heller based on the characters from the Batman franchise of DC Comics. Heller also serves as executive producer on the show alongside Danny Cannon, John Stephens and Ben Edlund. The series is produced for FOX by DC Entertainment, Primrose Hill Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Season 1 of Gotham debuted on FOX on September 22, 2014.
Gotham stars Ben McKenzie as young James Gordon and follows the birth of one of the most famous superheroes of all time. The show also stars Erin Richards, David Mazouz, Robin Lord Taylor, Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Camren Bicondova, Cory Michael Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, Victoria Cartagena, John Doman, Morena Baccarin and many others.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Season 2 of Gotham premiered on the FOX channel in the US on Monday, September 21, 2015 at 8pm ET/PT. Amidst a few struggling shows on Fox last season, Gotham’s debut season did very well in the ratings department, having averaged 10.6 million total viewers per episode. In fact, episode 1 of season 1 became the highest-rated fall drama debut on FOX in 14 years. So, to no surprise, the show got an early renewal. UPDATED November 11, 2015: In a few episodes, a second season of Gotham will take an almost three-month winter break as many late season series do. The FOX channel has just revealed its 2015-2016 midseason schedule for new and returning TV shows. According to the announcement, a second installment of season 2 of Gotham is scheduled to premiere on FOX on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 8pm ET/PT and will be followed by a new episode of Lucifer, which premieres on Monday, January 25, 2015 at 9pm after The X-Files. At the moment, the show is averaging just 4.33 million viewers per episode, with is a very huge decline of 29%. UPDATED March 17, 2016: The Batman prequel Gotham has just landed an early renewal for a third season, the FOX network announced. While the live ratings are down a significant 29% to 4.3 million viewers when compared to the first season, the multi-platform numbers for delayed viewing are still impressive, with an average of 9 million people tuning in to watch. Gotham has also been a consistent top-10 performer in the 18-49 male demographic. There is enough confidence invested in the series by the network, and that's great news for the fans of the gritty classic. UPDATED June 18, 2016: The fall release of the DC Comic-related Batman prequel Gotham has been set in an announcement by Fox. The third season of the criminal fantasy adventure series will air on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 8pm, with the cliffhangers of the riveting season two season finale requiring immediate attention, and some whose resolution will probably be delayed, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.
