About the show

Masters of Sex is an American period drama television series that is currently airing on the Showtime channel in the United States. The series is an adaptation of Thomas Maier’s book Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love. Masters of Sex was created and executive produced by Michelle Ashford (The Pacific). The series is executive produced by Timberman Beverly Productions’ Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman, and Judith Verno. Michael Sheen and Tammy Rosen serve as producers. Masters of Sex is produced by Sony Pictures Television. Season 1 of Masters of Sex premiered on Showtime on September 29, 2013.

The storyline explores the research and the relationship between Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), two pioneering researchers of human sexuality. The series also stars Caitlin Fitzgerald, Teddy Sears, Nicholas D'Agosto and Annaleigh Ashford.

Masters of Sex was renewed for a third season in August 2014 despite the fact that the ratings of season 2 were down by 25% (to 0.8 million viewers) as compared to the debut season of the show. Season 3 of Masters of Sex premiered on Showtime in the US on July 12, 2015. So far, the first two episodes have averaged only 0.56 million viewers. UPDATED August 13, 2015: Great news! On August 11, during its panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Beverly Hills, Showtime has officially announced the renewal of Masters of Sex and Ray Donovan for season 4. A fourth season of the show will consist of 12 one-hour episodes, and the production is slated to begin in 2016. Showtime Networks Inc. president David Nevins called both shows “signature series” for the network. UPDATED June 4, 2016: Showtime has just revealed the premiere dates for its hit Sunday night television dramas, including Shameless. A fourth season of the Golden Globe Award-nominated period drama TV show Masters of Sex is scheduled to hit the small screen in the US on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 10pm ET/PT. The critically-acclaimed drama series will have to face an increased competition when it returns, as Starz network is moving its original shows, including Power, to Sunday nights come July.
