Summary and storyline
Wayward Pines is a new American mystery and thriller television series that is currently airing on the Fox channel in the United States. The new drama series was developed by Chad Hodge (The Playboy Club, Runaway, Anita) based on the novel Pines written by Blake Crouch. Wayward Pines is directed by an acclaimed Indian-American director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Lady in the Water, The Visit), who also serves as an executive producer for the show alongside Donald De Line (The Italian Job, Green Lantern), Chad Hodge and Ashwin Rajan (After Earth, Labor of Love). Season 1 of Wayward Pines premiered on Fox on May 14, 2015.
Wayward Pines is an intense psychological thriller starring Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon (Wild Things, There’s Something About Mary, Crash) as a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents, whose investigation only turns up more questions. The series also stars Carla Gugino as Kate Hewson, one of the missing agents and Ethan's former lover; Toby Jones as Dr. Jenkins, a psychiatrist at Wayward Pines Hospital; Shannyn Sossamon as Theresa Burke, Ethan's wife; Reed Diamond as Harold Ballinger, a toymaker; Tim Griffin as Adam Hassler, Ethan's boss; Charlie Tahan as Ben Burke, Ethan and Theresa's son; Juliette Lewis as Beverly, a bartender who bonds with Ethan; Melissa Leo as Pam, a nurse at Wayward Pines Hospital; and Terrence Howard as Sheriff Arnold Pope.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Wayward Pines debuted on the Fox channel in the United States on May 14, 2015 and it is set to consist of 10 episodes. The highly anticipated event series debuted simultaneously in more than 125 countries, making it the world's largest day-and-date launch for a scripted series ever. The initial reviews have been very positive, noting that the series is “creepy and strange in the best way possible”, which is exactly what you would expect from M. Night Shamalyan. UPDATED December 11, 2015: Finally, FOX has made the right decision and renewed its hit mystery and sci-fi drama series Wayward Pines for a second season. There will be some changes, though, behind the camera – Chad Hodge, the creator and the showrunner, is not coming back to work on the show because he is in the middle of producing a new series for TNT, titled Good Behavior. FOX has not yet revealed any details with regards to the plot, but there are rumors that the show might go down the anthology route, with significant casting changes and the storyline, much like Fargo.
UPDATED February 7, 2016: Not only FOX’s newest mystery drama series will have a new showrunner since the creator of the show has left to work on another project, but since the network revealed that the series was renewed for another round, the fans have been dying to find out who will be the male lead in the second chapter of what now is shaping up to be an anthology series. As you remember, Matt Dillon’s character was killed off at the end of the first installment. We have just learned that the second chapter will star Jason Patric who will play a surgeon. UPDATED March 4, 2016: The FOX network has finally unveiled the premiere date for a highly-anticipated second installment of the highly-rated thriller and drama series from M. Night Shyamalan, Wayward Pines. A 10-episode second season is scheduled to hit the small screen in the US on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 8/7c. Terrence Howard will return as Sheriff Arnold Pope, while Jason Patric has joined the cast as the new lead character to star alongside Hope Davis and Djimon Hounsou.
