Summary and storyline
Happyish is a new American dark and satirical single camera comedy-drama television show on the Showtime channel that is at the moment airing its debut season in the United States. The dramedy was developed and penned by a well-known author Shalom Auslander who also regularly contributes to This American Life. He also serves as executive producer on the show together with Emmy Award nominee Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You, Outsourced, The Office) and Alexandra Beattie (Alive & Well, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). The pilot was first aired on Showtime on April 5, 2015 and the dramedy show was released in the US on April 26, 2015.
This is a series filled with sarcasm, irony and black humor. The protagonist of the series is a forty-four year old Tom (portrayed by Steve Coogan), a top manager who loves his son and his wife. But he suddenly has problems at work after two young guys have become his new bosses and they are the trying all kinds of new strategies, including taking the company in a direction of social networking, but Tom decides to challenge that. At first he challenges only his new bosses, but then he starts questioning his whole life too.
Critical response and renewal hopes
Season 1 of Happyish debuted on the Showtime channel on April 26, 2015 and so far it is set to consist of ten episodes, with the finale episode scheduled to air on June 28, 2015. Surprisingly, despite the all-star cast, so far the reviews of the first chapter of the show have been rather mixed. Some shows take longer to capture the audiences, so it will be interesting to see how the viewership develops in the next few months and how it will affect the fate of a possible renewal. UPDATED July 25, 2015: Unfortunately, after just one season, Showtime has made a decision not to renew Happyish for season 2. The decision was mostly driven by rather disappointing ratings – season 1 of Happyish has averaged just 240,000 viewers per episode. The reviews have been also quite lukewarm. Happyish had been a passion project for Showtime topper David Nevins who developed a pilot in 2013 starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Kathryn Hahn. After Hoffman’s death, the project was eventually re-piloted with Steve Coogan and Hahn starring and picked up to series.
