Basic info and storyline

Vikings is an Irish-Canadian historical drama television series that is currently airing on the History channel in the United States and Canada. The series was written and created by Michael Hirst (The Tudors, Camelot) who also serves as an executive producer along with John Weber (Reign), James Flynn (The Borgias), Sherry Marsh (Peeples), Alan Gasmer (To Appomattox) and Sheila Hockin (Penny Dreadful). Octagon Films and Take 5 Productions are behind the series. Season 1 of Vikings premiered on 3 March 2013 in the United States and Canada on the History channel. The current fourth season debuted on February 18, 2016.

The historical drama series is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the better-known heroes of Norse mythology, and infamous for plundering England and France. The storyline of the Vikings portrays Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel; The Baytown Outlaws) as a former farmer who becomes notorious after successfully raiding into England with the support of his family and fellow warriors: his brother Rollo (played by Clive Standen; Atlantis), his son Bjorn (played by Alexander Ludwig; The Hunger Games), and his wives—the shieldmaiden Lagertha (played by Katheryn Winnick; Bones) and the princess Aslaug (played by Alyssa Sutherland; Don't Look Up). The series is filmed in Ireland.

Zenescope partnered with the History Channel to create a free Vikings comic book based on the famous TV series. It was first distributed at Comic-Con 2013 and by comiXology in February 2014. The comic was written by Michael Hirst himself.

Current season, ratings, reviews and renewal

The current chapter of the period thriller contains 20 sixty-minute episodes, which will be divided into two 10-episode installments. Prior to the season premiere the creative team has dropped a few hints, promising the bloodiest and the darkest chapter yet. And it is living up to the promises so far, with its unpredictable twists, betrayals of trust and even a chilling encounter with a bear. There also three new cast members who joined the series – Peter Franzén, Jasper Pääkkönen and Dianne Doan, adding new dimensions to the already rich storyline.

Vikings continues to be a major ratings hit for the History channel, opening to 2.394 million viewers and a top non-rerun demo rating of the night of 0.9. Furthermore, the premiere episode doubled the viewership to 4.6 million in the L+3 delivery. The 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating and an 8.6/10 IMDb score reflect the universal acclaim for the series and the unbelievable degree of popularity that it enjoys.
